In keeping with a commitment to care for the environment, we read a declaration in defense of trees in front of the DeLand City Commission and the Volusia County Council.

“Overdevelopment is eliminating hundreds of acres of shade. Shade lowers the ambient air temperature by as much as 10 degrees. The bulldozers are destroying trees whose roots are efficient filtering systems for removing toxins from the soil. Trees and their root systems absorb water during heavy rains which helps prevent run-off and flooding.“

While a member of our Meeting read the statement, Quakers wearing our signature  t-shirts stood in the audience holding signs that read “Trees Are Cool.”

The declaration urged the elected officials to do everything in their power to stop the clear-cutting of trees.
